Gudetama Pull-apart Bread

I always love to make pull-apart bread! This pull-apart bread recipe is simple to make and cute to eat. This Gudetama-inspired food recipe is a must-try at home! Very cute and fun pull-apart bread idea. Here is how to create this Sanrio-themed food recipe.

Ingredients:

I have attached links for some of the ingredients/items that I used below.

White Dough:

  • 300g Flour

  • 50g Sugar

  • 150ml Milk

  • 3g Instant Yeast

  • 1 Egg

  • Pinch of Salt

  • 15g Unsalted Butter

Yellow Dough:

  • 25g Flour

  • 5g Sugar

  • 10ml Milk

  • 1/8 Tsp Instant Yeast

  • 13g Buttercup Squash

Decoration:

*Square pan dimensions: 8 inch by 8 inch. This is the square pan that I used.

Steps:

  1. Cut your Buttercup Squash into slices or squares and steam for about 10 minutes or until the squash softens.

  2. Once your squash softens, mash it up. We will be using this later.

To make the white dough:

  1. In a bowl, add milk and a pinch of sugar.

  2. Add instant yeast to the milk. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes.

  3. In a separate bowl, add flour (remember to sieve your flour), sugar, egg, salt, and milk with instant yeast, and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, gradually add milk until the dough is a little sticky to the touch.

  4. Cover the bowl, and wait for 20 minutes.

  5. After 20 minutes, add in butter. Knead for about 5 minutes or until you can stretch the dough, where it almost becomes transparent.

  6. Place the dough back in the bowl and proof for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.

To make the yellow dough:

  1. In a bowl, add milk and a pinch of sugar.

  2. Add instant yeast to the milk. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes.

  3. In a separate bowl, add flour (remember to sieve your flour), sugar, mashed squash, and milk with instant yeast, and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, gradually add milk until the dough is a little sticky to the touch.

  4. Cover the bowl, and wait for 20 minutes.

  5. After 20 minutes, knead for about 5 minutes or until you can stretch the dough, where it almost becomes transparent.

  6. Place the dough back in the bowl and proof for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.

After an hour:

  1. For the white dough, divide them into 16 portions. Each portion will be 34g.

  2. Knead the portions into a circle and proof for 15 minutes.

  3. 15 minutes later, knead again into a circle and place them in your square pan lined with parchment paper.

  4. For the yellow dough (Gudetama’s body), divide them into 16 portions and roll them into a circle. Each portion will be 3g. The remaining dough will be for the arms.

  5. Preheat oven to 300F.

Time to Decorate:

  1. Place your yellow dough (Gudetama’s body) on top of the white dough however you’d like. To prevent the yellow dough from falling off, you can dab a little bit of water on the white dough before placing the yellow dough on top. The water acts like our glue.

  1. With the remaining yellow dough, create little small balls. These will be Gudetama’s arms.

  2. Now, let’s connect the arms to Gudetama’s body. You can look at the picture below for reference.

  1. Bake your buns at 300F for about 15 minutes. I am using a countertop oven.

  2. Once the time is up, leave the buns in the oven for 5 minutes before taking them out. This will help prevent them from getting wrinkly.

  3. Let the buns cool off before drawing on Gudetama’s features.

  4. Take melted dark chocolate and draw on Gudetama’s eyes (in a shape of a diagonal oval).

  5. Take melted white chocolate and draw on Gudetama’s mouth (in a shape of a half-circle).

  6. Take melted dark chocolate and draw the outline of Gudetama’s mouth.

  7. Your pull-apart bread is ready! You can also enjoy these just the way they are or with some condensed milk!
