Hello Kitty Tang Yuan (Glutinous Rice Balls)

Tang Yuan aka Glutinous Rice Balls is a dessert that has been enjoyed by many. Let’s take this classic and give it a cute twist, Hello Kitty style!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup of Glutinous Rice Flour

  • 1/4 Cup + 1 Tbsp of Water

  • Black Sesame Seeds

  • Red & Yellow Food Colouring

  • 1 Cup of Water

  • 1/2 Cup + 1/4 Cup of Brown Sugar or 1/2 + 1/4 stick of Rock Sugar

  • 2 Slices of Ginger

Steps:

  1. Mix 1 cup of glutinous rice flour with 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp of water. The consistency should not be too dry, where it will crumble, but not too wet, where it will stick to your fingers.

  2. Mix 1 tbsp of glutinous rice flour with a drop of red food colouring and slowly add water until you achieve the right consistency. Do the same for yellow food colouring.

  3. Divide the glutinous rice balls into 10g.

  4. Remember to save some dough for Hello Kitty’s ears.

  5. For Hello Kitty’s ears, form small triangles. Dab a little bit of water to the base of the triangles before attaching them to the head (this will help them stay in place when boiling).

  6. For Hello Kitty’s eyes, we are using black sesame seeds. I highly recommend using a toothpick and gently pushing the sesame seeds into the tang yuan (this will help prevent them from falling off when boiling).

  7. For the nose, take your yellow dough and form small ovals.

  8. For the bow, take your red dough and create one small circle and two slightly bigger circles.

  9. For the whiskers, we are also using black sesame seeds.

  10. Turn your stove to high heat.

  11. Once the water starts boiling, turn the stove to low heat. Slowly add in your tang yuans. Once they float, they are cooked and ready to go.

  12. For the tang yuan soup, boil a cup of water, and add 1/2 cup + 1/4 cup of brown sugar and two slices of ginger.

  13. Once ready, pour over your tang yuans, and enjoy your cute Hello Kitty tang yuans!

Divide your glutinous rice balls into 10g each.
